A Dog With Nice Ears
The inspiration for this story of the dog-rabbit came from Maisie, my friend’s daughter. When Maisie was three she was cast as an angel in her nursery’s nativity play. Her mother, who knew this, was surprised when Maisie announced that she was, “Mary.”
Gently she explained that this was not so, but Maisie could not be convinced. “I am Mary,” she said. A few days later her mother asked, “What would make a good costume for an angel?” Maisie said, “Something blue because Mary wears blue.”
My friend watched the nativity waiting for the truth to dawn and the disappointment to set in, but it never did. As far as Maisie was concerned she was Mary, no matter the tinsel wings and white tunic. I think Lola has this same strength of character and it is not a bad way to be. If you believe hard enough then a RABBIT truly can be a DOG with nice ears.
